College Days Nostalgia
January 27, 2008Although, my college days is not that exciting as compared to others, those days, I consider, are the most important part of my life. Living away from. Together with others from different parts of the country… speaking dialects that were alien to me at that time.
The place was Cebu, and on my 2nd year of college, I have just tranfered to one of the best univerisities in that city (perhaps one of the best in the country). Though I was born and grew up in another part of Visayas, at that time, I don’t speak their dialect. However, I found the dialect was easy to learn (for me at least). After a few weeks or so, I was already able understand and speak well– with the help of other Ilonggo’s as well (Ilonggo or Hiligaynon is my native tongue). I opted to occupy a room by myself in my first boarding house, so I don’t have deal with a stranger then… besides I have always loved to be alone.
I have been exposed to and learned so many things that life has to offer, both good and bad. In my first night in my boarding house, the room that I was suppose to occupy was not finished yet, so I settled to another unoccupied room upstairs. I had no electric fan yet, so I opened the door to let some breeze in from the coridor. I got more than I bargained for. Smoke, coming out from the other rooms. No, they were not on fire. I haven’t used it (at the time) but the scent was familiar. The sweet scent was very typical, as the thin smoke enters my room. I later found out that the smoke were coming from two different rooms. I didn’t mind it. In fact, I had a good night sleep that time. I guess you know what smoke is now. heheh.
I have faced a lot of challenges in college, some I have overcome, some I simply let it go. Perhaps one of the first challenge was my first Physics class. When my older board mates learned who the teacher was, they said that I’d better withdraw the subject or drop it, there’s a slim chance that I could pass this typical professor. I did not do what they suggested, instead I took the class. The professor was challenging indeed, his exams and quizes are difficult but his teaching method is very effective. Unfortunately I contracted chicken pox about two weeks before our mid-term exams, so I missed his class in those two weeks. I was cleared by my doctor to go to class just in time for the mid-term exams. I figured, In order to have a passing grade for the mid-term, I have to answer four out of the eight problems given. I easily answered three. And when I looked at the other problems.. Uh-oh! All the remaining problems were taken from the lessons when I was sick! I got a 3W for the midterm (that’s just saying I am a point less to pass). Nevertheless, I proved my board mates wrong. I passed the class.
(I have to mention this) My personal doctor came all the way from Roxas City to Cebu just take care of me . He was the best of course… he was my Dad.
. And he came the very next day he learned I got chicken pox.
I met some of my best buddies during college. Including my best friend who is from Cebu right now. Though our friendship grew when we were already working and joined SFC. But one of the best friends that I met, but I don’tknow where he is right now, was Warren. He was once my boardmate. He brought me into this gym where I learned aikido. I got hook in the art and kept on practicing. He stopped after a few months.
Ahh… there’s still a lot to recall and tell during my college days. Perhaps I shall post more soon and hopefully with pix
